TECHNICAL FIELD [001] The present invention generally relates to mounting assemblies for display devices in a vehicle passenger compartment in which the display devices are for reproducing digital information to users, such as video, audio, text and images, and in in particular, to display devices having mounting assemblies that provide detachable mounting arrangements. FUNDAMENTALS [002] Commercial passenger airlines typically provide row seats to efficiently use the space available for passenger accommodation. The intended objective is to maximize the number of passengers that the aircraft can carry per flight for the economical use of the vehicle. In general, commercial passenger transport is a competitive business requiring efficient operation. [003] Frequently, commercial passenger airlines equip their aircraft with in-flight entertainment systems to alleviate passenger boredom. In-flight entertainment systems are especially common on aircraft used for longer flight routes. In-flight entertainment systems often include a display device, or monitor, mounted on the back of the passenger seat. A passenger seated in a seat facing the display device can use the display device to reproduce digital information such as video, audio, text, images and more, depending on the in-flight entertainment system equipped with the aircraft. [004] In the past, display devices that required partial disassembly of a seat were used to mount the display device to it. More particularly, the display devices required attachment to mounting points on the inner seat frame and harness attachment to the seat. Once assembled, the display device is supported by the inner seat structure with the display portion of the device exposed by the seat back for viewing by a passenger. At least one prior art arrangement requires insertion of the display device through the front of a seat back bracket to mount the monitor. [005] The advantage of the previous arrangements is that the display devices mount very securely to the inner seating structure. Seats on passenger aircraft are designed to withstand various severities in the event of sudden deceleration and the display devices are attached to the inner seat support structure. If there is a sudden deceleration event, the display devices are held tightly and generally do not detach from the seat back in a sudden deceleration event. Also, it prevents unauthorized tampering as passengers cannot easily detach a display device. [006] Although the previous arrangement provides secure mounting of a dial, there are drawbacks. The main drawback is that the assembly of the display device is labor intensive and time-consuming in this way. Significant time is required to disassemble each seat, attach a display device to the internal mounting points, and attach a wiring harness to the display device. It can be very time-consuming to initially equip an aircraft with these display devices, as commercial passenger aircraft have hundreds of seats. Also, repairing or replacing defective display devices is labor intensive and time-consuming once they are installed. [007] As discussed earlier, commercial passenger transport is a competitive business requiring efficient operation. There is a desire to reduce the time and cost associated with assembling display devices. In addition, should a display device require repair or replacement, efficient operation requires that repair or replacement be done as quickly as possible so that the aircraft can be returned to service as soon as possible. [008] Furthermore, conventional designs have space inefficiencies. Space is required behind the monitor to allow one or more connectors from a wire harness to be connected to the monitor. In particular, installation personnel must have enough space to reach behind each monitor when it is being installed to ensure safe electrical connections to the monitor. [009] The present invention addresses the prior hindrances of conventional display or monitor mounting arrangements by providing a mounting assembly that allows for faster attachment and removal of a display device, while securely affixing the display device and preventing unauthorized removal. [010] Document US2012063081A1 discloses a docking station for a video monitor, including a base plate adapted for mounting to the seat back, spaced shafts rotatably mounted on the base plate, including spaced hooks to engage the video monitor hooks, a tilt member slanting the hooks toward a latch, alignment rods that extend from the baseplate to align the video monitor with the baseplate, and a baseplate-mounted electrical connector to mate with a monitor's electrical connector to supply power and signals to the monitor. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [011] An assembly for mounting a display device on a vehicle is provided in which the display device includes a rear surface. In a preferred embodiment in accordance with the present invention, the assembly includes a mounting plate having opposing edges, a front surface extending between the tables and a rear surface opposite the front surface. The mounting plate is capable of being mounted to the vehicle with the front surface of the mounting plate facing outward. [012] The assembly further includes a first locking mechanism disposed close to one edge of the mounting plate and a second locking mechanism disposed close to the other edge of the mounting plate. Each locking mechanism includes a claw extending over the front surface of the mounting plate and pivotable between closed and open positions. Each gripper includes a resiliently deformable deflection element connected to the grip and displacing the grip towards the closed position. [013] In addition, the assembly includes an electrical connector attached to the mounting plate. The electrical connector has an opening to mate with another connector. The electrical connector attaches to the mounting plate with the connector opening exposed. [014] The mounting assembly includes a clamp structure disposed on the rear surface of the display device. The clamp structure includes a first edge engageable by one of the claws and a second edge engageable by the other claw when the surface of the display device is pressed against the front surface of the mounting plate. [015] The assembly further includes the other anterior connector disposed on the display device in a position in which this other connector coincides with the electrical connector of the mounting plate when the claws engage the edges of the clamp structure. Preferably, the assembly includes at least one guide structure. The guide frame is composed of a pin extending from one between the mounting plate and the display device and a recess disposed in the other between the mounting plate and the recess in which the recess receives the guide pin therein when the other connector matches the electrical connector. [016] In another aspect, a process or method is provided for detachably mounting a display device on a vehicle in which the display device includes a rear surface. In an embodiment according to the invention, the method includes providing a mounting plate having opposing edges, a front surface extending therebetween and a rear surface opposite the front surface. [017] The method further includes attaching the first and second locking mechanisms to the mounting plate opposite each other. Each locking mechanism includes a claw extending over the front surface of the mounting plate and pivotable between the closed and open positions and hinged to remain resiliently in the closed position. The method further includes providing on the mounting plate an electrical connector having an opening to mate with another connector and wiring to connect to a power source, with the opening of the connector exposed to the front surface of the mounting plate. Thereafter, the method includes attaching the mounting plate to the vehicle with the electrical connector wiring connected to a power source in the vehicle. [018] The method further includes providing a clamp structure on the rear surface of the display device, with the clamp structure including a pair of edges with one edge being engageable by the claw of one of the locking mechanisms and the other edge being engageable by the claw of the other locking mechanism. The method includes mounting the display device to the vehicle by pressing one edge against the jaw of one of the locking mechanisms and the other edge against the jaw of the other locking mechanism until each jaw engages its respective edge of the clamp structure. The method also includes supplying the display device with the other connector and matching the other connector with the electrical connector when the claws engage the edges of the support structure. [019] More particularly, providing the display device with the other connector includes securing this connector to the display device in a position opposite the opening of the electrical connector when each claw is engaging its respective edge of the clamp structure. Hence, when the other connector is received in the electrical connector opening, the connectors match or electrically connect to each other to pass power and/or data between the connectors. [020] The method provides for disassembly of the display device after it has been mounted to the vehicle, that is, the display device is detachably mounted. For removal, the method includes providing on each of the grips a release tab to release the grip from the engagement from its respective edge of the clamp structure when the release tab is depressed. To prevent unauthorized disassembly or removal of a display device, the method includes providing on the mounting plate a locking tab extending between the release tab and the display device when each claw engages its respective edge of the clamp structure. To remove or disassemble the display device despite the presence of the locking tabs, the method includes providing a release tool having an L-shaped element. According to the method, the L-shaped element is inserted between the tab and the release tab to release a hitch claw from its respective edge of the clamp frame to dismount the display device after it has been mounted to the vehicle. [021] In another embodiment according to the invention, an assembly for mounting a display device on a vehicle is disclosed, in which the display device has a rear surface. The mounting plate includes a front surface and a rear surface opposite the front surface on which the mounting plate is capable of mounting to the vehicle with the front surface facing outward. [022] The assembly includes a locking mechanism supported by the mounting plate. The locking mechanism includes a jaw movable between locked and unlocked positions with the jaw offset to remain in the locked position. The locking mechanism also includes a release tab protruding from the locking mechanism which, when the release tab is depressed, moves the gripper to the non-locked position. [023] The assembly further includes an electrical connector having an opening to mate with another connector. The electrical connector attaches to the mounting plate with the connector opening exposed. [024] The assembly includes a clamp structure disposed on the rear surface of the display device. The clamp structure includes an edge which is engaged by the claw when the rear surface of the display device is placed in an engagement position by pressing the rear surface of the display device against the front surface of the mounting plate with the edge of the clamp frame pressing against the grip to move the grip to the unlocked position. When the display device reaches the engagement position, the claw returns to the locked position due to its displacement and engages the edge of the clamp structure. [025] The other connector is arranged on the display device in a position such that the other connector coincides with the electrical connector when the display device is moved into the engagement position. To prevent unauthorized disassembly of the display device, the assembly includes a locking tab protruding from the mounting plate in front of the release tab when the claw engages the edge of the clamp frame. [026] For removal or disassembly after assembly has been performed, the assembly includes a release tool. The release tool includes a portion or an element having a bend in which the element is insertable between the locking tab and the release tab when the claw engages the edge of the clamp structure. This allows the release tab to be pressed in with the tool. [027] In another aspect, the claw includes an inclined surface against which the edge of the clamp structure is pressed. Tilt facilitates movement of the gripper to the unlatched position when moving the display device to the engaged position. [028] Other aspects and other advantages will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the attached drawings illustrating by way of example the principles of the invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED MODALITIES [030] FIG. 1 illustrates a preferred embodiment of an assembly, generally indicated by reference numeral 10, in accordance with the present invention. Assembly 10 is for mounting a display device 12 to a vehicle. FIG. 1 illustrates the assembly 10 being used to mount the display device 12 to the heights of a seat 14 of the vehicle. However, assembly 10 can be used to mount display device 12 to other portions of the vehicle, such as a wall or bulkhead of the vehicle. [031] The assembly 10 includes a mounting plate 16 having a front surface 18 and a rear surface 20 (see Figs. 3 and 4) opposite the front surface 16. The mounting plate 16 is secured to the vehicle by conventional methods. Preferably, the method of attachment is of a type allowing the mounting plate 16 to tilt or pivot so that when the display device 12 is mounted thereto the angle of the display device 12 can be adjusted to an optimum angle for a user. For example, an adapter plate 22 can be attached to the rear surface 20 of the mounting plate 16. The adapter plate 22 is rotatably supported on a rod or shaft 24 which is supported by a base plate 26. instead, it attaches to the vehicle frame. Alternatively, if the display device 12 has a wide range of satisfactory viewing angles, the mounting plate 16 can be fixedly fixed to the surface of the vehicle, so that the mounting plate 16 is not able to be independently tilted after be attached to it. When mounting plate 16 is attached to the vehicle, front surface 18 of mounting plate 16 turns outward to receive display device 12. [032] Mounting plate 16 includes opposing edges 25 and 27. Mounting plate 16 further includes at least one locking mechanism, generally indicated by reference numeral 28, mounted near one of the edges 25 or 27 of the mounting plate 16. Preferably, there is another locking mechanism 28 near the other edge 25 or 27 of mounting plate 16. [033] Each locking mechanism 28 includes a claw 30 extending over the front surface 18 of the mounting plate 16. In particular, the claw 30 protrudes over its respective edge 25 or 27 of the mounting plate 16. Thereafter, a rib 32 projects parallel to front surface 18 of mounting plate 16 toward the side axis of mounting plate 16. [034] Each claw 30 is supported by the mounting plate 16. In particular, each claw 30 rotatably rests on the rear surface 20 of the mounting plate 16. As shown in Fig. 4B, each claw 30 is mounted on the rear surface 20 of a hinge 31. More particularly, the hinge 31 of each jaw pivotally mounts on a shaft or pin 34 supported from the rear surface 20 of the mounting plate 16. The shafts or pins 34 extend parallel to the rear surface 20 of the mounting plate 16. [035] Another pin 38 near each edge 25 and 27 of the mounting plate 16 extends orthogonally outward from the rear surface 20 of the mounting plate 16. The head 40 of each orthogonal pin 38 is visible from the front surface 18 of the mounting plate. mount 16, as seen in Fig. 1. Each claw 30 includes a prong 42. Prong 42 extends from claw 30 parallel to the rear surface 20 of mounting plate 16 and includes a recess corresponding to the shape of a capital letter U. The distal end of each orthogonal pin 38 is received in its respective U-shaped recess. A spiral spring 36 is disposed around each orthogonal pin 38 and is resiliently compressed between the rear surface 20 of the mounting plate 16 and a tooth 42 of a claw 30. Compression of springs 36 resiliently displaces each claw 30 to remain in a closed or locked position. In alternative embodiments, a torsion spring can be used instead and mounted with the shaft or pins 34 to which the claws 30 mount. [036] The locking mechanisms 28 include a release tab 44. In particular, each claw 30 includes a release tab 44 protruding orthogonally therefrom in a direction opposite to tooth 42 and rib 32 thereof. Backward pressure on the release tab 44 rotates its respective claw 30 away from the closed or locked position, that is, towards the open or unlatched position. Release tabs 44 provide leverage to rotate jaws 30 against the bias provided by springs 36. [037] The mounting plate 16 includes an electrical connector 46 having an opening to mate with another connector 48 on the back of the display device 12 (see Fig. 2). Electrical connector 46 includes wiring 50 leading from the opposite side to which wiring 50 connects to sources of electrical power and/or data in the vehicle. Electrical connector 46 is attached to mounting plate 16 with its opening exposed when display device 12 is not attached. In particular, connectors 44 and 48 are respectively arranged so that when display device 12 rests on the vehicle with mounting assembly 10 connectors 44 and 48 align and coincide with each other. [038] The mounting assembly 10 includes a clamp structure indicated generally by reference numeral 52 in Fig. 2, disposed on the rear surface of the display 12. The clamp structure includes upper and lower edges 54 and 56. An edge 54 of the clamp structure 52 is engaged by one of the locking mechanisms 28 and the other edge 56 is engaged by the other locking mechanism 28. In particular, the display device 12 is mounted on the mounting plate 16 by pressing the surface of the clamping device. display 12 against front surface 20 of mounting plate 16. More particularly, upper edge 54 of clamp structure 52 is pressed against jaw 30 of upper locking mechanism 28. Simultaneously, lower edge 56 of clamp structure 52 is pressed against the jaw 30 of the other locking mechanism 28. [039] If sufficient pressing force is applied, the grippers 30 move towards the open or closed position. To facilitate movement of the claws 30, each claw 30 includes an inclined surface 58. In particular, the outer surface 58 of the rib 32 of each claw 30 is chamfered or inclined toward the lateral axis of the mounting plate 16. When the edges 54 and 56 of the clamp 52 are pressed against the inclined surfaces 58, there is a normal component of force generated against the inclined surface 58 which tends to rotate the claws 30 towards the open position. This facilitates the sliding of the edges 54 and 56 of the clamp structure through the ribs 32 of the claws 30 into the engaged position. [040] When an edge 54 or 56 slides along the rib 32 of a jaw 30, the jaw 30 moves or rotates back to the closed or locked position due to the biasing force of its spring 36. The rib 32 of the jaw 30 slides behind edge 54 or 56 of clamp structure 52 and thereby engages edge 54 or 56. This prevents display device 12 from being dismounted until claw 30 is moved or rotated to the open or closed position. [041] Clamp structure 52 is illustrated in Fig. 2 as two separate clamps 60 and 62. Clamps 60 and 62 are each illustrated as attached to the rear surface of display device 12 by fasteners 64. In alternative embodiments, the clamp structure 52 may be a single larger clamp to provide the edges 54 and 56 for engagement by the locking mechanisms 28. Alternatively, the clamp structure 52 may be formed integrally on the rear surface of the display 12. For example, a portion of the back surface may be removed to form a recess under a bridge portion in which a bridge or bridges provide the edges 54 and 56. In still an alternative embodiment, the support structure may include ribs integrally formed with the back surface of the bridge. display device 12 of which the ribs protrude from the rear surface and provide the edges 54 and 56 for engagement by one or more mecha locking systems 28. [042] The previously described release tabs 44 facilitate disassembly of the display device 12. That is, after the display device 12 has been mounted on the vehicle with the mounting assembly 10, the release tabs 44 can be pressed back to move the jaws 30 to the open or unlatched position. This allows the display device 12 to be readily detachable. [043] To prevent the display device 12 from being detached by an unauthorized person, the mounting plate 16 includes a locking tab 66 corresponding to the release tab 44. Each locking tab 66 projects parallel to the plane of the mounting plate. mounting 16 to a position opposite its respective release tab 44 when release device 12 is mounted to the vehicle. The locking tabs 66 are formed integrally with the mounting plate 16 forming a recessed portion in the mounting plate 16 over which the claws 30 extend. As can be seen more clearly in Fig. 4B, each locking tab 66 includes a serpentine bend so that the distal end of the locking tab 66 is offset relative to the proximal end. However, both the distal and proximal ends of each locking tab 66 extend substantially parallel to the plane of the mounting plate 16. In alternative preferred embodiments, the locking tabs 66 may extend from the seat 14, rather than the mounting plate. 16, to a position opposite the release tabs 44. The locking tabs 66 make it difficult for one to slide a thin object, such as a credit card or ruler, between the edge of the display device 12 and the vehicle frame to press a release tab 44. [044] For this purpose, as generally indicated by reference numeral 68 in Fig. 5, a release tool is provided. Release tool 68 includes a shank 70 forming the main body of the tool. A pair of spaced apart suction cups 72 extend from the stem 70 parallel to each other. Arms 74 extend from near each end of rod 70. In use, arms 74 are inserted between display device 12 and the back of seat 14, with suction cups 72 facing the display device's viewing surface. 12. Suction cups 72 are formed of a soft or flexible elastomeric material and protect the viewing surface from damage by helping to prevent direct contact with harder surfaces of tool 68. In this regard, the remainder of tool 68 is formed of a harder material, although preferably a plastic material, which could damage or scratch the viewing surface of the display device 12. [045] As can be seen more clearly in Fig. 6, each arm 74 of a pair extends at an angle to the other arm 74 of that pair. Torque handles 76 and 78 extend rearwardly from the main body 70 next to each arm 74, substantially in line with the longer longitudinal dimension of its respective arm 74. A torsion handle 78 at each end of the tool main body 70 is deviated from its arm 74 along the length of the rod 70. Figs. 7 and 8 show a partial cross section to more clearly illustrate the deviation. [046] With continuous reference to Figs. 7 and 8, each arm 74 terminates at one end in an L-shaped element 80. The L-shaped geometry allows each of these elements 78 to bend around a locking tab 66 to make contact with the release tab. 44 behind it. When force is applied to the torsion handles 76 and 78 to rotate the handles towards each other, the arms 74 likewise rotate towards each other. In this state, the arms 74 are inserted between the display device 12 and the back of the seat 14 to disassemble the display device 12. Thereafter, the force is removed and the arms 74 expand away from each other, so that the longer leg of each L-shaped element 80 passes behind a locking tab 66. Hence, when tool 68 is pressed forward, force is applied to each of the release tabs 44, which causes the claws 30 move to the unlatched or open position to disassemble the display device 12 from the mounting plate 18. [047] In alternative embodiments, the arms 74, the main tool body 70 and other parts, except the suction cups 72, may be formed of a metal or metal alloy and have a scissor-like arrangement in which the arms 74 are rotatably mounted. In other alternative embodiments, instead of a tool 68 having four arms 74, a tool having a single arm with an L-shaped or bent element is provided to press against a single release tab 44, rather than all of the release tabs. release 44 simultaneously. [048] Returning to Fig. 1, the mounting assembly 10 preferably includes at least one guide frame, generally indicated by reference numeral 82 in the figure. Guide frame 82 includes at least one alignment pin or guide 84 and preferably a pair of pins 84 extending from mounting plate 16. As seen in Fig. 2, corresponding recesses or guide holes 86 are formed in the rear of the device. display 12. When display device 12 is mounted to mounting plate 16, guide frame 82 helps maintain alignment and prevent damage to electrical connectors 46 and 48. [049] In alternative preferred embodiments, guide pins 84 can be formed in the rear of the display 12 and the recesses or guide holes in the mounting plate 16. In other alternative embodiments, combination ribs and grooves can be employed in place of the pins 84. [050] The components forming the mounting assembly 10 are preferably formed of a metal or metal alloy for greater durability and wear resistance. Preferably a light, economical metal or metal alloy is used, such as aluminum. Greater fuel economy is achieved for a vehicle if weight is minimized for mounting assembly 10. In alternative preferred embodiments, a hard plastic material may be used for mounting assembly 10 for at least some components thereof. However, durability and reliability are not expected to be greater for plastic than with a metal material, although weight and cost will likely be lower than if metal or an alloy of metal is used. [051] The drawing figures illustrate an embodiment having opposite locking mechanisms 28. Opposite locking mechanisms 28 make it easier to assemble and disassemble the display device 12 when it is located in a confined space, such as in a recess in the back of a seat 14. In alternative embodiments, a single locking mechanism 28 may be provided and an opposite rib near the other edge of the mounting plate 16 or possibly hooks. In this embodiment, the clamp structure 52 is first engaged with the opposite rib or hooks and then pressed against the jaw 30 of the single locking mechanism 28. The advantage of a single locking mechanism 28 embodiment is that it reduces costs. [052] If a single locking mechanism 28 is used with an opposite rib near the opposite edge, the electrical connector 46 could be mounted facing up from the rib, towards the side axis of the mounting plate 16. Similarly, the other connector 48 on display device 48 would be moved to the lower edge of display device 12. The advantage of this arrangement is that connectors 46 and 48 can be combined together by first lowering display device 12 down onto the ribs and then pressing the upper edge of the display 12 against the back of the seat 14 to engage the claw 30. Hence, in this embodiment there is no need to simultaneously combine connectors 46 and 48 when the claws 30 are engaged and thus mounting the display device 12 is facilitated. [053] The described embodiments provide an advantage in that a mounting device 12 can be assembled with much less labor required and also disassembled for replacement or repair with much less labor required. In addition, the modalities help prevent unauthorized disassembly by requiring a release tool due to locking tabs 66. Hence, the modalities can be used to mount display devices 12 to which the public has access, such as on passenger aircraft commercial, buses, tens, ferries and other types of vehicles used for public transport. Assembly 10 could also be used to mount a display device 10 in a building for public access, such as a kiosk. [054] Another advantage of the described modalities is that it provides "blind" combination of electrical connectors 46 and 48. Due to guide pins 84 and guide holes 86, installation personnel do not need to visually inspect electrical connectors 46 and 48 for correct alignment when a 12 display device is being installed. Guide pins 84 and corresponding guide holes 86 provide the required alignment of electrical connectors 46 and 48 during installation. Hence, efficiency improvements are provided with respect to both space and time required for installation and/or maintenance. Hence, efficiency improvements are provided with respect to both space and time required for installation and/or maintenance. [055] Since changes may be made as described to alternative preferred embodiments, the present examples and embodiments will be considered as illustrative and not restrictive and the invention is not limited to the details given in this document, but may be modified within the scope and equivalence of the attached claims.
